“The days are long, but the years are short.”
I couldn’t find the exact source for this quote, but nonetheless, It’s perfect for how I feel about time. It’s summer, but before I know it, the branches will be bare, and winter will come again. For someone who doesn’t particularity cope well in the heat, sometimes it can feel summer just…escapes me. I hate the wasps, I hate the feel of my makeup melting off my face, allergies, the stickiness, the constant frown on your face because it’s just simply too bright to look straight. Despite all of those…annoyances, summer still has it’s advantages and it’s great moments, even to the most psychotropic of people, like the way the sun makes patterns on the ground through the leaves in the trees and the way everything looks so much better in summer.
So I’ve decided I need to make the most of Summer for once, but surviving it actually being outside is no easy feat. So, if like me you find it hard to survive summer, this is my guide to at least trying to enjoy it- (Unfortunately I still do not enjoy the wasps. Wasps are evil.)
A RECLUSIVE’S GUIDE TO ENJOYING SUMMER (OUTSIDE)-
This is something I’ve found recently and I love it. Whether you listen while just sitting in the shade, drinking a cool drink, or as you go for a bike ride or a walk, I always find myself learning a lot from them. And there’s so many to choose from, just about anyone and everything has a podcast these days!
I like to pretend I am good at taking photographs, but mostly it’s just I happen to press the button at the right time in the right place. But seriously, taking photographs is so fun and once again can help you appreciate summer for it’s beauty, where everything is blooming.
4. GO FOR A WALK/WALK A DOG-
I love love love, to walk my dog. Mostly because I get to meet other dogs without being some creep who just trails parks trying to touch everyone’s dogs. But all jokes aside, being outside in forests and parks and beaches and fields always makes me appreciate summer and how beautiful and full of life everything looks, like the flowers that bloom and the trees that are full and green.
3. DRINK ICE COLD DRINKS + ICEPOPS/LOLLIES
Once again, something I probably don’t have to remind anyone to do in the summer. But lemon water tastes so much better when you’re cooking in the heat. What’s better to cool you down than something ice cold?!
Obviously this was going to be on there. Once again, not exclusive to summer, but the great thing about reading and writing is that it can be done anywhere. When I do venture outside, I always make sure a book or a journal is not far from my hand. There are just some books that I will always associate with summer for this very reason.
Listening to music is obviously not just exclusive to summer, but being outside listening to something that embodies the sound of summer summer is pretty great. Whether it’s through earphones, blasting out loud or playing quietly on a turntable, having a good soundtrack for summer is essential to surviving it.
Tell me what you do to survive summer in the comments! I guess I should probably venture outside now I’ve finished this…
