This billboard made by the fabulous and amazing Guerrilla Girls was made in 2011. In fact, this was actually a remake of the same billboard they made in 2005, surprisingly, the statistics for 2011 were even worse.
This billboard also by the Gurrilla Girls also came out in 2002…yet you wouldn’t know, because with this years 2015 Oscar Nominations, clearly nothing much has changed.
In an LA Times study, they found that a whopping 94% of Academy Awards voters are Caucasian. 77% of those voters were male, and the average age of them all was 62. How is any of that representative of the people who watch or are apart of the film industry today?
To make things worse, not one person of color was nominated for an acting award. Even Ava DuVernay who directed the critically acclaimed film Selma was not included in the nominations for Best Director. In fact not woman was nominated in the Best Director category. To quote The Atlantic, ‘the Oscars haven’t been this white in 19 years.’ I mean…aren’t we supposed to be progressing? How come a film about Martin Luther King Jr. can be nominated for best picture…but then not receive any nominations for acting, screenwriting or directing?! It blows my mind.
If the lack of diversity or roles for minorities in Hollywood wasn’t clear enough by now, surely this is just a slap in the face for those who didn’t realize it before.
I’ve never been overly enamored with The Oscars because I have always felt like the awards were given to those most popular rather than the quality of the performance, writing or directing. I’ll admit though, I do love seeing the glamour of The Oscars, the dresses, the sometimes emotional speeches. But this year, I’m going to put aside my desires to see a beautiful dress and refuse to tweet or post about anything to do with the Oscar winners or how fabulous the dresses were. I know this wont really make much difference to the fact that women and people of colour are being left out of The Oscars and Hollywood in general, but hey, at least I’m not going to actively support it!
(PLUS- Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t get a nomination for Nightcrawler?!?!? Are you kidding me?!?!?)
